it's been a month

this blog ended up being useful, because i looked back recently to the post about having some chest pain and realized it was a month ago. i mean besides the utility in spouting out all my feelings somewhere and knowing that people i care about are reading.

i had been feeling better, healing from whatever was going on with me, but then this weekend i started feeling a little rough again. on monday i called my doctor because getting better then getting worse seems like something to check in about (and once i realized you can do free video consults on the app for my doctor, all bets were off). they told me to go to urgent care and get an x-ray and said they'd been seeing patients have a viral infection and then a bacterial one afterward.

i was really reluctant. the news says to steer clear of medical facilities, in new york there aren't enough beds for people etc. but the urgent care i went to was super empty, they had masks for patients and hand sanitizer (though one was donated by a local distillery and it kinda smelled like vodka). i didn't have to wait at all to see someone. they drew blood, took an x-ray and the doc prescribed me some antibiotics saying that it looked like pneumonia. they don't do covid tests there, but they wouldn't have given me one anyway because i'm not very unwell.

i've had pneumonia or bronchitis almost every year for the past couple years, and i usually go to this urgent care to deal with it because they have the x-ray machine. it felt similar to that, except i didn't let myself get to the point i usually get to before i go: coughing so much it keeps me up at night and i go begging for some cough syrup.

today they called saying the radiologist reviewed my x-ray and it didn't look like pneumonia, but that i should keep taking the antibiotics. so that's what i'm going to do, though it didn't really inspire confidence.

i felt like i wanted to tell people what was going on with me. and i wanted people to know that they should seek treatment as they always have, just not in hospitals. there are probably a lot of people just sucking it up and coping with whatever illness they have right now.

when i talked to a friend whose a nurse today she told me that people have been coming into the ER with serious issues like heart attacks and then just dying there because they should have come sooner but they waited days because they were scared.

it's not that i really think things will take a turn. i feel pretty well, but i did see news that two people in their 30s died in DC the day before yesterday and I wondered what got them to that point? were they ill from something else and covid complicated things? did they feel well and things suddenly got worse? or was it long and slow?
